Car swappage schemes overtake scrappage

This time of year the buzz word seems to be ‘budget’ whether in relation to the Government’s spending plans or our more modest household budgeting and in the current economic climate any money saving ideas are welcome, especially if you need to purchase high value items.

Good news for those who need to upgrade their car, as the Government’s scrappage scheme offering £2,000 for your old car ends, Vauxhall have recently announced a new scheme offering new buyers discounts of up to £3,000 in exchange for cars over 7 years old. Not to be outdone, Toyota is offering £2,000, plus the budget brand Skoda and also Hyundai have introduced a version of ‘swappage’ scheme.

Hyundai’s swappage scheme called ‘Happy Returns’ allows clients to exchange certain models (as long as they are less than 12 months old) for a new 2010 March registration last month for a small fee starting from £499. What’s the point? Well apart from a brand new car with a March 2010 registration clients will save on the cost of tax renewal, its first service and will also benefit from a new five year warranty. Plus they are giving away ´Friends and Family’ vouchers worth £250 off a new motor.

Furthermore the company is going one step further by offering new UK clients discounts of up to £2,000 for cars aged between seven and ten years old, which is the same deal offered under the now defunct Government scrappage scheme. Of course the only guaranteed ways save money is not to spend anything!
