Knowing how to stay healthy, is halfway to being healthy

Knowing how to stay healthy

As a multi-channel, multi-media world we’re constantly bombarded with information, much of it conflicting, so it’s no surprise that when it comes to medical matters, many of us are in a perpetual state of confusion.

Most people are in agreement, that the key to staying fit and healthy is exercise and a healthy diet. But is it really that easy? Even eating ‘healthily’ can become a mine field of contradictions depending on where you get your information. However, it’s on more serious health issues that we tend to get flustered, reaching for the ‘Home Doctor’ books or surfing the web. The internet is a great tool which can both alleviate fears and also cause unnecessary anxiety. With the click of a mouse we self-diagnose a million and one conditions or mistakenly disregard serious conditions, trying to assess symptoms and second guess treatments. It’s a case of ‘a little information can be a dangerous thing’.
Apart from a lack of medical expertise (unless you are actually a medical profession!), a major reason for worry, is misunderstanding and misinterpretation of medical jargon, thereby incorrectly assessing illness or best practice medical treatments.

Recently, the Guardian Newspaper (Lifestyle section: www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/besttreatments) got together with the British Medical Journal to provide a straightforward glossary of treatments, eschewing jargon and written in a language we can understand. The aim is to debunk medical myths and offer an insight into how to treat medical conditions such as a stroke.

If you are interested in taking the extra precaution of safeguarding your health by taking out private health insurance, you may be interested to know that Insureme4 has got together with a selection of leading international health care providers to bring you a wide choice of private health insurance policies supplied by AXA PPP and Medical & General (Bupa and Aviva soon to be onboard). A cost effective way to supplement the service provided by the NHS and to ensure that you get the best treatment within the shortest space of time.
