Holiday firm Sun4U collapses stranding 1,200 people

Travel firm Sun4U has collapsed, leaving approximately 1,200 customers stuck abroad.

The firm's website said it had ceased trading and advised people to contact claim handlers for the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta).

Abta said those with Air Travel Operators' Licensing (Atol) packages should be able to continue with their holidays as planned.

A spokesman said: "There are approximately 1,200 people away at the moment and most of them are in Spain.

Anyone who has booked a package holiday must contact the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) or contact the supplier named on their invoice."

Goldtrail - Updated 11th August

On the 16th July it was announced that Goldtrail has gone into administration. Approximately 16,000 people are stranded abroad and another 34,000 have future trips booked which will now be cancelled. A helpline has been set up with the CAA on 0203 44 108 46 or 0844 856 2585 or for overseas customers on 0044 203 441 0846 and details of what actions customers should take are given here: www.goldtrail.co.uk. Goldtrail Travel is ATOL registered.

There is an exclusion under the cancellation and curtailment section for "Failure of the provider".

Therefore there is no cover under Insureme4 Travel Insurance policies and customers should be directed back to their tour operator/travel agent. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has taken steps to protect customers booked with Goldtrail Travel Limited after the company ceased trading on Friday.

As stated above there are approximately 16,000 customers of Goldtrail currently abroad. The CAA is currently making arrangements for getting the ‘majority' of them home. Many of these customers will have bought their holidays as a package and therefore have cover under ATOL and will not be charged for their trip home.

If an alternative trip is offered to the customer for the same duration and destination and there are no changes in medical conditions, customers can transfer their single trip policies to cover their new holiday dates at no additional cost. Customers who are not offered a replacement holiday can cancel single trip policies and will be offered a pro-rata refund of the total premium paid including any additional costs for medical screening less transaction and postage charge.

Unrest in Thailand

The following information relates to Policies underwritten by Mondial

Due to the current unrest in Thailand the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office and the Department of Foreign Affairs in Ireland have issued the following travel advice.

Statement issued by Foreign office

We advise against all but essential travel to the whole of Thailand.

This advice does not apply to passengers transiting Bangkok airport on their way to foreign destinations.

Cancellation claims

Although the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) and Department of Foreign Affairs in Ireland have advised against all but essential travel to Thailand, our policies only cover cancellation for the causes stated in your policy document, currently no cover is in force. Customers are advised to contact their travel agent or tour operator who may be willing to arrange a change of destination.

Curtailment claims

Government advice against travelling to areas experiencing unrest (such as Thailand) does not constitute a specified cause within our policies, therefore curtailment is not covered. Customers are advised to contact their travel agent / tour operator / airline.

Travel Delay

Some customers may have experienced delays due to the temporary closure of airports - please note that Bangkok International Airport is currently listed as open by the FCO.

Travel to Cuba

Staysure can confirm that both Mondial are insurance entities recognized in Cuba and therefore travellers arriving with a Staysure insurance policy covering medical expenses will conform to the new Cuban regulations.

Travellers will be requested to show Insurance documentation on arrival in Cuba.
